Mary Shelley’s Early Life
Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, to William Godwin, a political thinker, and Mary Wollstonecraft, a philosopher and supporter of women’s rights. Sadly, her mother passed away just 11 days after she was born.
When Mary was just four years old, her dad got married to a woman who lived nearby, named Mary Jane Clairmont. Mary didn’t get along well with her. Even so, her dad gave her a good, though not formal, education and encouraged her to follow his own political ideas.

Mary Shelley Relationships
In 1814, Mary fell in love with Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was a fan of her dad’s politics. Even though Percy was already married, they ran away to France in July 1814. They got married at the end of 1816, after Percy’s first wife, Harriet, took her own life.
Mary Shelley’s early life had a lot of sad moments, including the death of her baby, who was born too early. But due to all these experiences, she found her true path and played a big role in becoming a famous writer.
Mary Shelley’s Career begins
Mary Shelley started her writing career in 1816. She got the idea for her first book, “Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus,” while on a holiday in Geneva, Switzerland, with Lord Byron and John Polidori.
After her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, passed away in 1822, Mary went back to England. She spent her time promoting Shelley’s writing and working on her own writing. She edited and published his “Posthumous Poems” in 1824 and his “Poetical Works” and “Letters” in 1839.
Besides working on her husband’s writings, Mary also focused on her own books. She wrote several novels, including “Valperga” in 1823, “The Last Man” in 1826, “The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck” in 1830, “Lodore” in 1835, and “Falkner” in 1837. Her most famous book, “Frankenstein”, is still widely read today and has been turned into many plays and movies.
Mary Shelley’s Death
Mary Shelley, a famous English writer, died on February 1, 1851, in London, when she was 53. She had a brain tumor, which likely caused her health problems in her last 10 years.
